Sclerotherapy is done in the office without anesthesia.
Sclerotherapy is done in the office without anesthesia. The area to be treated will be cleansed with alcohol. A liquid solution is slowly injected into the vein using a very small needle. These chemicals irritate the vessel wall/lining causing an inflammation and then internal scarring.
Some people experience stinging when the needle or solution is inserted, but the discomfort is typically not long lasting.
Once the needle is withdrawn, your provider will apply a cotton compression dressing to the area. The number of injections depends on the number of veins that need to be treated. Compression stockings are applied immediately after completion of treatment. Compression helps blood from being trapped in the problem vein(s), and keeps the vein walls collapsed so that scarring can take place.
